How we know when something matters

We know an activity is important when we make a point of doing it, rather than shrugging it off. Resolutions die, but values live on. We prove our values through our choices. And, as one famous wizard once wisely said,

It is not our abilities that show what we truly are; it is our choices.

– Albus Dumbledore 🧙‍♂️

It’s easy to be deterred from what we truly value. Easy to go down rabbit holes, to lose sight of the forest for the trees. I find that, for me, this happens most often when I’ve defined my goals in generalities — “work on the GigLoft site” rather than “ship the new home page and Playbook page.”

I discovered Dark Reader this week, and fell down a rabbit role this weekend by deciding that the GigLoft site needed to be completely dark themed. Instead of focusing my precious few weekend hours on building a pre-sales campaign, I created half a new homepage and am no closer to pre-selling the PubLoft Playbook than I was last weekend.

I know this matters deeply to me because I’m not satisfied with how my weekend was spent. I wish I’d caught myself before but it’s water under the bygone.

Best use of my time now is to recenter ahead of this week, which is promising to be busy as ever.

The Playbook will sell eventually.
