Futuristic world with hover cars, overlapping time zones, & moderate time control because of it (police can move "through" time zones)
Detective going thru life blankly, mild alcoholic
Find out some of the story of how he lost his wife (memories of disappearance & supposed death are peppered throughout book)
Report of a fatal multicar accident code 12 on Boardwalk fwy
Detective responds, follows screeching tire tracks in dirt, traces of metal
Arriving at scene in progress, sees two cars on a crash course toward each other, on either side of a building
Tries to warn people & change course of history, explains that some of the accident already happened at midnight but some is about to happen for others
Can't get to other time zone fast enough to warn them, so tries to convince people here to change course.
Too slow? Inevitable
Next day, visits victim's home
Instagram feed hallway (?!) full of family photos, camera shot falling back towards the door
Sign on the door saying: Your life doesn't stop when somebody leaves it. Detective learns to heed his own advice, starts getting involved in his community teaching kids about safe driving.
Flash fwd to years later, a young man is nearly in an accident, avoided thanks to detective's community work.
Twist?- meets victims wife and is shocked to find its his supposed late wife. She does not recognize him whatsoever
Detective learns to be happy that she's alive?
